Rachel Ward nearly lost The Thorn Birds after a disastrous first reading
Rachel Ward's audition for The Thorn Birds went badly, and acting coach Sandra Seacat helped her win the part anyway. The 1983 miniseries made her a star and a Golden Globe nominee, and on set she met Bryan Brown, the actor she married before carving out a second career as an Australian filmmaker.
Ward was born in England on 12 September 1957, the eldest daughter of Peter Alistair Ward, third son of the 3rd Earl of Dudley. Her great-grandfather, the 2nd Earl, served as Governor-General of Australia from 1908 to 1911, and her younger sister Tracy became Duchess of Beaufort and an environmental campaigner. She grew up at Cornwell Manor in Oxfordshire, bought by her parents in 1959 and still held by the family as of January 2026. Her parents divorced when she was twelve.
After Hatherop Castle School and the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, she left education at 16 to model, landing covers for Vogue and Cosmopolitan. Moving to the United States in 1977, she fronted adverts for Lincoln Mercury and Revlon, and Time dubbed her the face of the 80s. Her film career began strongly: Sharky's Machine with Burt Reynolds brought a 1981 Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year, and she followed it with Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid alongside Steve Martin.
Playing Meggie Cleary opposite Richard Chamberlain in The Thorn Birds meant a punishing five-month shoot while Seacat simultaneously reshaped her performance, and Ward credits the coach for much of her success. That year American audiences voted her among the world's ten most beautiful women. She starred with Jeff Bridges in Against All Odds in 1984, then stepped away after Fortress in 1985 to study acting, returning in 1987 opposite Brown in The Umbrella Woman.
A third Golden Globe nomination came in 2001 for the miniseries On the Beach. By then she was also directing: in 2001 her short The Big House took the top short-film prize from the Australian Film Institute, and Martha's New Coat followed in 2003. In 2007 she led the ABC drama Rain Shadow as a rural vet in a drought-stricken town, and her 2009 feature Beautiful Kate earned AACTA nominations for directing and screenplay. Her daughter Matilda Brown is also an actress.
