The battlefield dynamics of the conflict have been defined by both sudden technological disruptions and long-term territorial shifts. By February 2026, the war entered a phase where Russia increasingly relied on infiltration tactics. However, the disabling of unauthorized Starlink terminals caused a significant communications breakdown, which unexpectedly facilitated Ukrainian clearing operations in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. These operations allowed Kyiv to retake territory and stabilize several threatened sectors, even as Russia maintained pressure on the Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, and Lyman directions.
Earlier milestones in the conflict demonstrated the impact of maritime and precision warfare. On June 30, Ukrainian forces successfully drove Russian troops from Snake Island, a strategic outcropping in the western Black Sea located 80 miles south of Odesa. The recapture of this island, alongside the sinking of the Moskva, degraded Russia's ability to project force in the Black Sea and allowed Ukraine to expand the use of Danube ports for its export economy. Following the fall of Lysychansk and Syeverodonetsk, which gave Russia control over the last major population centers in Luhansk oblast, the conflict centered on the stronghold of Bakhmut. For six months, Russian forces attempted costly assaults on Bakhmut without success. Meanwhile, the introduction of American-supplied HIMARS in late July enabled Ukraine to strike bridges near Kherson, threatening to cut off Russian forces on the west bank of the Dnipro River. Such precision strikes also targeted leadership, including an attack on a Wagner Group headquarters in Luhansk that reportedly killed up to 100 mercenaries.
