Kimi Antonelli faces qualifying setback at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
During the recent Formula 1 race in Baku, Azerbaijan, championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered car damage during qualifying. The incident occurred as the 20-year-old driver clipped a concrete wall, forcing him to start the race from 16th position.
The Baku street circuit presents significant technical challenges, featuring a 2.2 km straight, a medieval fortress gate, and winds from the nearby Caspian Sea. According to Ars Technica, the race schedule was moved one day earlier this year to prevent a conflict with Azerbaijan's celebrations regarding its recent war with Armenia.
The proximity of the track walls leaves minimal room for error. While the previous year's qualifying saw six red flags due to crashes, this year's primary drama involved Antonelli. After misjudging his front grip at turn 1 during the first knockout session, the damage to his left front tire ended his qualifying run. This follows a recent race at Monza where Antonelli started 19th due to power unit penalties, though he managed to secure a victory there.
