Investigation reveals fatal failures of US border surveillance towers
An investigation by MIT Technology Review has identified over one thousand deaths occurring in areas monitored by the US southern border's virtual wall. Despite billions spent on surveillance towers over the last 25 years, many individuals passed through these monitored zones without being detected or apprehended.
The surveillance system, often referred to as a virtual wall, utilizes towers intended to detect and apprehend border crossers to prevent loss of life. However, MIT Technology Review's findings indicate that many people died in these borderlands despite being under the watch of these technologies. Some of these fatalities occurred even within the range of newly installed towers that use artificial intelligence to automatically identify human presence.
The report highlights a significant gap between the promised security capabilities of the technology and the actual humanitarian outcomes. The investigation included the creation of a comprehensive map documenting deaths along these monitored routes, revealing a crisis that was previously less visible. The findings suggest that the basic security promises of the multi-billion dollar surveillance infrastructure are not being met.
