Walmart CEO clarifies that digital shelf labels will not enable personalized pricing
Walmart CEO John Furner has addressed concerns regarding dynamic pricing, stating that the retailer will not adjust product costs based on individual shopping histories, income levels, or the time of day a customer makes a purchase.
According to a report by The Verge, Walmart is transitioning to digital shelf labels across its stores. While such technology can be used for real-time price adjustments, Furner clarified in a letter to customers that the primary goal of this implementation is to reduce the workload for store associates.
The company's policy ensures that factors such as a customer's urgency, personal income, or even the specific time of day—such as a rushed afternoon purchase—will not trigger price increases. Furthermore, the retailer stated it will not use data from interactions with its Sparky assistant to influence what customers are charged for goods.
