The Battle of Donbas: How Russia Shifted Strategy to Focus on Eastern Ukraine
Following an initial three-pronged invasion of Ukraine, Russia pivoted to a second strategic phase in April 2022. This offensive aimed to encircle Ukrainian troops and seize the entirety of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The campaign transformed the region into a brutal theater of artillery, logistics, and shifting territorial control.
The Battle of Donbas officially began on 18 April 2022, marking a transition from Russia's failed attempt to capture Kyiv. Military analysts identified this as the second phase of the invasion, characterized by a more concentrated effort to annex the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. By mid-April, satellite imagery and intelligence reports confirmed that Russian units were repositioning from northern fronts to the east, supplemented by reinforcements from Belarus and Russia.
Russian strategy relied on heavy artillery bombardment to destroy infrastructure and break Ukrainian defenses. By late June 2022, Russia claimed control over 55% of Donetsk Oblast and, by early July, the entirety of Luhansk Oblast, including key cities like Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk. However, the offensive faced significant resistance. Ukrainian forces utilized Western-supplied artillery, such as M142 HIMARS, to target Russian ammunition depots, forcing the invaders to conserve resources. By September 2022, the Russian advance stalled, and a Ukrainian counteroffensive recaptured strategic locations like Lyman and Sviatohirsk.
The human cost of the conflict has been immense. Even before the 2022 invasion, the war in Donbas had claimed over 10,000 combatants and 3,095 civilians since 2014. The 2022 offensive saw the destruction of 95% of Mariupol and the deaths of over 25,000 civilians in that city alone. While Russia initially sought a three-to-one numerical superiority, the conflict evolved into a war of attrition. By November 2022, despite earlier setbacks, Russian assaults renewed across the region, reflecting the persistent and protracted nature of the fighting.
The campaign remains a subject of intense analysis regarding military objectives. While Russia framed the offensive as the 'liberation' of the Donbas, diplomatic officials and military experts have argued that these goals were secondary to broader imperialist ambitions. The shifting front lines and the involvement of various forces—including Wagner Group mercenaries and international volunteers—highlight the complexity of this pivotal chapter in the Russo-Ukrainian war.
