Wars & Conflicts

The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine is the largest European conflict since 1945.

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, escalating a conflict that began in 2014. The war has triggered Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II, caused hundreds of thousands of casualties, and fundamentally altered the geopolitical landscape, challenging the sovereignty of a democratic state.

The roots of the current conflict trace back to 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and covertly supported separatists in the Donbas region. Following the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, Ukraine pivoted toward Western integration, eventually seeking NATO membership. Vladimir Putin, however, viewed Ukraine's sovereignty as a historical error, repeatedly claiming that Russians and Ukrainians were one people and that the Ukrainian government was illegitimate.

By late 2021, Russia began massing troops along Ukraine's borders while issuing ultimatums to NATO, demanding a permanent ban on Ukrainian membership. Despite Western diplomatic efforts, Putin launched a multi-front invasion on 24 February 2022, aiming to capture Kyiv within days. The Russian plan, which involved regime change and the establishment of filtration camps, faltered against unexpected Ukrainian resistance. By April 2022, Russian forces were forced to retreat from the north, shifting their focus to a brutal war of attrition in the east and south.

The human and economic toll has been staggering. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced, and international bodies have documented severe human rights violations, including allegations of genocide and war crimes. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Russian officials, including Putin. Meanwhile, the global economy has faced significant disruptions, particularly in food and energy security. Estimates suggest the direct cost of the war for Russia exceeds US$450 billion, while the World Bank projects Ukraine's reconstruction costs at US$588 billion.

Today, the conflict remains a high-stakes struggle for territorial integrity and democratic survival. Despite ongoing international sanctions and military aid to Ukraine, peace negotiations have stalled. Russia continues to occupy roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory, and the war has expanded to include cross-border engagements, such as Ukraine's 2024 offensive into Kursk Oblast. The conflict serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of post-Cold War security arrangements in Europe.
