Why China targeted ride-hailing giant Didi immediately following its massive US stock market debut

Days after raising $4.4 billion on the New York Stock Exchange, Didi faced a sudden regulatory crackdown. This video examines the swift intervention by Chinese authorities, the impact on the company's stock price, and the role of China's relatively new cybersecurity review system in the unfolding situation.

Didi's listing was the largest Chinese debut in the US since Alibaba seven years prior. While the stock initially performed well, it dropped 5.3 percent to $15.52 on the Friday following the announcement of an investigation. Regulators cited the need to maintain national security and protect the public interest as primary drivers for their actions.

The Cyberspace Administration of China subsequently accused Didi of violating laws regarding the collection and usage of personal data. Consequently, the company was ordered to be removed from Chinese app stores. These measures are executed under a cybersecurity review framework that has been in place for approximately one year.
