Hugh Hefner built a media empire on the promise of a sexual revolution.

Starting with an $8,000 loan, Hugh Hefner transformed a magazine into a global brand that defined a lifestyle. Yet, behind the velvet ropes of the Playboy Mansion, critics and former associates describe a legacy defined by the systematic exploitation of women and a culture of manipulation that persists long after his death.

Born in 1926, Hugh Hefner launched Playboy in 1953 after being denied a $5 raise at Esquire. By featuring Marilyn Monroe in the inaugural issue, he achieved immediate success, selling over 50,000 copies. Over the following decades, Hefner cultivated a persona as a bon vivant, hosting television shows and operating a network of clubs. He positioned himself as a champion of individual rights, funding the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation and supporting causes ranging from First Amendment advocacy to the restoration of the Hollywood Sign.

However, Hefner’s public image as a cultural rebel has faced intense scrutiny. Critics like Suzanne Moore and Julie Bindel have argued that his primary business innovation was making the commodification of women’s bodies socially acceptable. Former partners, including Holly Madison, have alleged that he fostered a competitive and hostile environment among his live-in girlfriends. These claims were amplified in the 2022 documentary series Secrets of Playboy, which featured allegations of sexual misconduct, drug manipulation, and assault occurring at the Playboy Mansion.

The institutional response to these allegations has been a significant distancing. The current, publicly owned PLBY Group has explicitly stated that today's organization is not Hefner's, validating the accounts of those who have come forward. Even his widow, Crystal Hefner, alleged in a 2024 memoir that she felt imprisoned during her time at the mansion. Hefner, who died in 2017 at age 91, left behind a complex legacy that continues to be re-evaluated as the darker realities of his lifestyle are brought to light.
