Did Lordstown Motors executives dump their stock before the company's financial crisis hit?

Lordstown Motors executives sold millions in shares shortly before the company revealed severe capital shortages. This breakdown examines the timing of these insider sales and the subsequent warnings about the firm's ability to survive as a going concern.

In early February, five high-ranking Lordstown Motors executives sold shares totaling over $8 million. At the time, the stock traded at approximately $24 per share, a significant contrast to its later value of around $10. Among those who offloaded stock were president Rich Schmidt, former CFO Julio Rodriguez, and propulsion head Chuan "John" Vo.

Following these sales, the company disclosed in regulatory filings that its cash reserves were insufficient to reach commercial-scale production. CEO Steve Burns confirmed during an earnings call that the development of their debut pickup, the Endurance, remained at risk without additional capital. The company explicitly warned that its survival over the next 12 months depends entirely on its ability to secure new funding and navigate regulatory hurdles.
