Why hundreds of foreign-owned aircraft are currently stranded inside Russian borders

As Western sanctions mandated the termination of aircraft leases, foreign lessors moved to reclaim their assets. However, the Russian government countered by enacting legislation that allowed these foreign-registered planes to be re-registered within Russia. This maneuver effectively nationalized the fleet, leaving owners with little hope of recovery.

The stranded fleet consists of more than 450 aircraft, with a total estimated value of nearly $10 billion. With the March 28 deadline for lease terminations passing, lessors are now bracing for significant financial writedowns and preparing for protracted legal battles over insurance claims.
