How a former CTO built a workflow empire from a single-employee startup

ServiceNow began as a one-man operation in 2003, aiming to replicate the enterprise services of a defunct predecessor. Today, it is a global cloud giant powering automated workflows for thousands of corporations. Its evolution from a niche IT tool to an AI-integrated platform reveals the mechanics of modern enterprise software.

Founded in 2003 by Fred Luddy, ServiceNow originally operated under the name Glidesoft. Luddy, the former chief technology officer of Peregrine Systems, launched the venture with the goal of providing services similar to those of his previous employer. For the first two years, the company remained a solo operation until a 2005 venture capital injection allowed for the hiring of five additional staff members. By 2007, the company had achieved cash flow positivity and reported annual revenues of $13 million.

The platform functions as a cloud-based service designed to automate complex business processes. At its core, the system utilizes JavaScript and a proprietary API known as Glide to manage interconnected modules. These modules cover diverse corporate needs, ranging from IT service management and help desk operations to governance, risk management, and compliance. By linking these functions, the platform can automatically generate tickets and assign tasks based on audit findings, effectively streamlining organizational workflows that were previously manual or fragmented.

ServiceNow’s growth trajectory accelerated significantly following its 2012 initial public offering, which raised $210 million. Under the leadership of executives like Bill McDermott and CFO Gina Mastantuono, the company surpassed $10 billion in annual revenue by 2024. This expansion has been fueled by a series of strategic acquisitions, including machine learning startups and design firms, which have helped evolve the platform into a sophisticated AI-driven ecosystem. Recent developments include partnerships with Nvidia, Anthropic, and OpenAI to integrate generative AI and agentic features directly into the user experience.

Despite its success, the company faces the inherent risks of managing vast amounts of corporate data. In 2024, a misconfiguration in the platform’s access control settings led to the potential exposure of sensitive information from the knowledge base modules of over a thousand corporate users. This incident highlights the critical importance of security in automated systems. As ServiceNow continues to expand its global footprint, including significant investments in the United Kingdom and new offices in Florida, it remains a central pillar in the digital infrastructure of modern enterprise.
