The landscape of casual sex is also shifting. While the 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of widespread hookup culture, recent data from 2007 to 2017 indicates a decline in casual sex among young adults. Researchers attribute this downward trend to several lifestyle changes, including increased video gaming, reduced alcohol consumption, and more young adults living at home with their parents.
The emotional outcomes of these encounters are also heavily influenced by context rather than just gender. While some studies suggest women report more regret, these patterns often disappear when women express their own motivation and maintain open communication. Ultimately, the primary driver of sexual conservatism remains religiosity, which serves as a powerful indicator of more restrictive sexual views.
