When political ideology meets the occult: the strange rise of Esoteric Nazism
Beyond simple political extremism lies a complex web of mysticism, extraterrestrial myths, and Gnostic dualism. Emerging after World War II, this belief system reinterpreters the Third Reich not as a failed state, but as a spiritual struggle involving ancient gods, lost continents, and cosmic battles between light and darkness.
Esoteric Nazism, also known as Esoteric Hitlerism, is a fusion of Nazi ideology with occult traditions like Theosophy and Gnostic dualism. Following the fall of the Third Reich and Hitler's suicide, figures like the Greek writer Savitri Devi sought to deify Hitler. Devi viewed him as the ninth Avatar of Vishnu, a figure destined to return his people to a more perfect era. She even connected Aryanist ideology to the Indian independence movement, viewing the swastika as a symbol of unity between Hindus and Germans.
The movement's cosmology often relies on the concept of Hyperborea—a mythical, cold continent located between Iceland and Greenland. Writers like Robert Charroux claimed this was the home of an extraterrestrial Nordic race. This was expanded upon by the Chilean diplomat Miguel Serrano, who argued that 'Aryan blood' is of divine, extraterrestrial origin. Serrano utilized Gnostic traditions to frame a cosmic conflict, identifying the 'demiurge'—an inferior creator—with the God of the Old Testament. In this framework, he cast Jews as agents of this dark creator, elevating anti-Semitism to a theological doctrine.
Serrano’s vision included the 'Black Sun' and the belief that Hitler survived in Shambhala, an underground center in Antarctica, where he awaits a final battle with a fleet of UFOs. While some later figures like David Myatt moved away from extraterrestrial myths toward a more 'numinous' religious interpretation, the movement's influence persists. Today, these esoteric themes appear in contemporary subcultures, such as National Socialist black metal and small musical groups in Britain and France that blend neo-fascism with Satanism.
