A former military journalist and venture capitalist, JD Vance transitioned from a bestselling memoir about Appalachian poverty to the vice presidency in just a few years. His journey involves a complete political realignment, moving from a critic of Donald Trump to his running mate.
JD Vance’s rise to national prominence began with his 2016 memoir, *Hillbilly Elegy*. The book, which explored the socioeconomic struggles of the white working class in places like Middletown, Ohio, and Jackson, Kentucky, became a bestseller and a cultural touchstone during the 2016 election. While some critics, such as Sarah Jones, dismissed the work as a collection of myths regarding welfare, the memoir helped establish Vance as a prominent voice for the Rust Belt.
His professional trajectory has been marked by significant shifts. After serving as a military journalist in the U.S. Marine Corps and deploying to Iraq in 2005, Vance used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Ohio State University and later earned a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. He moved from corporate law into the technology sector, working for Peter Thiel’s venture capital firm, Mithril Capital, and later participating in the 'Rise of the Rest' initiative at Revolution LLC.
Vance's political evolution is equally notable. Originally critical of Donald Trump, he became a staunch supporter during his 2022 Senate campaign, defeating Democratic nominee Tim Ryan. As a Senator, he aligned himself with the 'postliberal' New Right movement, advocating for policies regarding border security and manufacturing. In 2024, he was selected as Trump's running mate, making him the first millennial and the first Iraq War veteran to serve as vice president of the United States.
Despite his political success, his career has faced complexities. His venture capital interests included AppHarvest, a vertical farming startup that filed for bankruptcy in 2023. Additionally, his religious identity shifted from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism in 2019, a move that has seen him cite Catholic theology in his political views, even as some church figures have criticized his interpretations of doctrine.
