During the liberation of France following the Nazi occupation of 1940–1945, the atmosphere was a complex mix of triumph and vengeance. While many citizens celebrated the departure of the German regime, a specific and violent phenomenon emerged targeting women suspected of collaboration. Curator Nathan Doherty of the Imperial War Museum (IWM) has highlighted these events through extensive film and photographic archives, including footage from the 1944 period. These records, preserved in collections like the IWM London exhibition 'Unsilenced: Sexual Violence in Conflict,' serve as a haunting testament to how sexualized violence and social policing were used as tools of justice and revenge during the transition from occupation to freedom.
The phenomenon of Les Tondues remains a striking chapter in the history of the Second World War, illustrating the thin line between liberation and the descent into communal violence. The archives, which include works from the Bundesarchiv and various historical photo collections, document a period where the end of Nazi rule brought not only the restoration of sovereignty but also a wave of intense, localized retribution against those deemed complicit in the occupation.
