NASA and Boeing announce updated flight plans for Starliner spacecraft
On September 28, 2026, NASA and Boeing revealed new development strategies for the Starliner spacecraft. The plan includes conducting uncrewed test missions and certifying the Vulcan rocket to ensure continued human access to low Earth orbit.
NASA intends to use Starliner for two additional missions to the International Space Station, specifically targeting a fifth and sixth flight. According to NASA, the agency is also working with United Launch Alliance to certify the Vulcan rocket following the final mission of the Atlas V. To validate recent spacecraft improvements, an uncrewed Starliner-1 mission is planned for late 2026 or early 2027.
The updates follow a February investigation that identified 61 recommendations after a 2024 crewed flight resulted in an uncrewed return. NASA reports that thruster issues were caused by thermal environments and design features. In response, Boeing is implementing thermal modifications and new valve designs. NASA aims to return astronauts via Starliner-2 by 2028.
