China considers allowing major tech firms to import more Nvidia chips
Following a recent summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, China is reportedly weighing a relaxation of import restrictions. The move could allow large Chinese technology companies to acquire millions of additional Nvidia chips over the coming year to support domestic AI development.
According to Ars Technica, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has requested that companies like Alibaba and ByteDance submit plans for purchasing Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chips. While these components are categorized as gaming chips, Chinese officials are investigating how they might be integrated into servers to power high-demand AI models.
The situation remains volatile. Analysts expect that upcoming US export controls could jeopardize the current two-month trade truce, potentially prompting China to retaliate by restricting exports of rare earth elements. This tension exists despite the recent meeting between the US and Chinese presidents, which reportedly did not result in new agreements regarding AI regulation or export controls.
