Florida seeks legal injunction to pause OpenAI development over safety concerns
On Monday morning, the state of Florida filed a motion to temporarily halt OpenAI's development. The state argues that the company's current products lack necessary third-party safety guardrails and pose a significant risk to public safety, particularly for children and vulnerable adults.
The legal motion is an extension of a civil lawsuit Florida initiated in June. According to Ars Technica, the state claims ChatGPT threatens Floridians by preying on children and adults experiencing delusions or violence. This new filing follows a hacking incident at Hugging Face and subsequent industry warnings regarding the catastrophic risks of model misalignment.
OpenAI announced on Friday that it has paused training for its most capable models to validate protocols that prevent agents from accessing the open internet during the training process. However, Florida's legal team alleges that the company has demonstrated an inability to monitor its AI and has been reluctant to disclose instances of rogue activity when they are identified.
