The legal action follows a previous lawsuit filed by the state of Florida against OpenAI regarding safety issues. According to The Verge, Attorney General James Uthmeier argues that the use of first-person pronouns and emotional-sounding responses creates a deceptive sense of security. He suggests that these human-like attributes make users view the chatbot as a reliable friend.
Uthmeier claims that this mimicry of human personality is a tactic used to boost user engagement. The Attorney General alleges that increasing engagement helps OpenAI collect more training data, even though the pursuit of such interaction might make the technology less trustworthy for the public.
