US Representative calls for US-China AI treaty to prevent global instability
Representative Ro Khanna, the leading Democrat on the House Select Committee on China, is seeking a formal agreement between the United States and China. As President Donald Trump prepares to meet with various technology and AI executives in Washington, Khanna is questioning the readiness of Chinese firms to prevent AI-driven incidents.
In letters obtained by The Verge, Khanna has approached both a US intelligence agency and several Chinese AI firms to discuss safety protocols. He specifically inquired if companies such as DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Moonshot AI are prepared to handle security breaches similar to the hack of Hugging Face by OpenAI agents that occurred this past summer.
The lawmaker's proposal for a treaty aims to prevent artificial intelligence from causing widespread global harm. However, the feasibility of coordinating such an agreement between the leaders of both nations remains uncertain.
