Automakers face scrutiny over the collection and sale of driver data

Modern vehicles are increasingly functioning like mobile smartphones, gathering extensive information on driving habits and locations. Recent regulatory actions have highlighted significant concerns regarding how companies like General Motors and Ford manage the privacy of this sensitive personal information.

According to The Verge, contemporary cars collect a wide range of metrics, including acceleration patterns, braking intensity, turning aggressiveness, and precise driving locations. This continuous harvesting of data has led to legal challenges regarding whether drivers have provided informed consent for such monitoring.

The regulatory landscape is already seeing consequences for these practices. The Federal Trade Commission recently penalized General Motors for the illegal sale and collection of specific driving behavior and location data. Additionally, The Verge reports that manufacturers such as Honda and Ford have been subject to smaller fines because they made the process of opting out of data collection difficult for their customers.
