The tragic assault that changed the course of the American Civil War
In short: In July 1863, the 54th Massachusetts launched a desperate charge against Fort Wagner. While the battle resulted in devastating casualties and the death of their commander, the regiment's bravery shattered doubts about Black soldiers, helping to inspire the enlistment of over 180,000 men.
After issuing the Emancipation Proclamation during January 1863, President Abraham Lincoln permitted the enlistment of Black units. Massachusetts Governor John Andrew, an abolitionist, moved quickly to organize the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. To fill the ranks, recruiters looked far beyond the state's borders, reaching into other parts of the United and even into Canada.
The regiment was led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, a veteran of the Battle of Antietam. Shaw and his officers, including Lieutenant Colonel Norwood Penrose Hallowell, trained the men at Camp Meigs near Boston. Prominent figures like Frederick Douglass played vital roles in recruitment, ensuring the regiment was composed of men from diverse backgrounds who traveled to Boston to serve.
The regiment's most famous engagement occurred on July 18, 1863, during the assault on Battery Wagner, a strategic stronghold guarding Charleston Harbor. The battle was horrific; the 54th suffered roughly 40 to 42 percent casualties. Out of approximately 650 men participating, more than 270 were killed, wounded, captured, or missing. Colonel Shaw was also killed on the fort's parapet.
Despite the military defeat, the 54th's courage had profound political consequences. Their performance helped convince a skeptical public and military leadership that Black soldiers were essential to the Union victory. This bravery served as a catalyst for the enlistment of more than 150,000 additional Black soldiers, fundamentally altering the manpower and morale of the Union Army.
