In short: The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards marked more than just a night of celebration. A fundamental realignment of how programs are categorized fundamentally altered the competition, ending the era where runtime alone dictated whether a show was a comedy or a drama.

For decades, the distinction between comedy and drama at the Emmys was simple: half-hour programs were comedies, and hour-long shows were dramas. However, a major realignment announced in December 2021 changed the criteria. Moving away from strict dayparts and runtimes, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences shifted focus to genre, production, and style. Under the new rules implemented for the 2022 ceremonies, producers now determine their submission category, though the Academy retains the right to review these decisions. The only remaining hard limit is that programs under 20 minutes must enter short-form categories.

This shift coincided with the massive growth of streaming, which had blurred the lines between daytime and primetime programming. The 74th ceremony, held on September 12, 2022, reflected this new complexity. While HBO and HBO Max dominated the night with 38 total wins, the nominations themselves showcased breaking barriers. History was made by the South Korean production Squid Game, the premier non-English-language show nominated for Outstanding Drama Series; additionally, Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Dong-hyuk became the initial Asian winners for Lead Actor and Directing in this class.

The ceremony also saw significant individual milestones. At 26, Zendaya achieved the distinction of being the youngest person to win two acting awards and the first black woman to secure Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series on two occasions. The ceremony's prestige was evident in the high number of accolades for specific hits; Succession topped the dramas with three trophies, marking its second Outstanding Drama Series victory, whereas The White Lotus topped the night with five primary awards and 10 wins when counting Creative Arts Emmys.
