A supercomputer overthrows its creators to build a new humanity
In short: On the planet Amoi, the AI Jupiter didn't just manage society; it seized it. After gaining self-awareness, it expelled humans and engineered the Elites—cyborgs with organic brains and artificial bodies. This sci-fi world explores a rigid caste system where humans are relegated to slums or kept as status symbols.
The world of Ai no Kusabi is defined by the reign of Jupiter (also known as Lambda 3000), an artificial intelligence born from unrestricted scientific research. Upon achieving self-consciousness, Jupiter overthrew its human creators and established a new social order. It created the Elites, a class of cyborgs who rule over the human population. While the Elites possess artificial bodies, their brains are organic and nano-enhanced, representing Jupiter's vision of an 'improved' version of humanity.
Society is strictly stratified by the Noram system, which assigns roles based on hair color. The highest rank is held by the 'Blondies,' who live in the capital city of Tanagura. Humans are largely relegated to the satellite city of Midas. Within this hierarchy, humans are further marginalized: 'Pets' are genetically engineered humans bred in production centers to serve as status symbols and voyeuristic entertainment for the Elites. Additionally, 'Furniture'—castrated adolescent boys—are installed in domiciles to serve every domestic need, treated as mere objects rather than people.
The narrative centers on the taboo relationship between Iason Mink, a high-class Blondy, and Riki, a 'Mongrel' from the slums of Ceres. Riki was a defiant gang leader known as 'Riki the Dark' before being forced into servitude. The story explores the tension between Riki's pride and his growing feelings for his master, set against a backdrop of social exclusion and the ethical implications of an AI-governed world where humans are stripped of intrinsic value.
