In short: Born in 1943, Akaji Maro is a titan of Japanese performance art. As the founder of Dairakudakan, he transformed the avant-garde butoh movement into a global phenomenon. Beyond his stage mastery, Maro has built a prolific career in cinema, appearing in dozens of films while fostering a family of creative artists.

Akaji Maro was born in Sakurai, Nara, in 1943. He emerged as a central figure in the development of butoh, a form of Japanese dance theater known for its intense, often grotesque, and highly expressive physical language. In 1972, he established Dairakudakan Temputenshiki, a name that translates to The Great Camel Battleship. This company became a cornerstone of the butoh movement, gaining an enduring international reputation for its large-scale, visually striking productions that challenge traditional notions of movement and performance art.

While his roots are firmly planted in the experimental theater world, Maro’s influence extends deep into the Japanese film industry. His career as a screen actor began in 1980, and since then, he has appeared in over 42 films. His work spans various genres, demonstrating a versatility that complements his theatrical background. More recently, he appeared in the 2023 production Hayabusa Fire Brigade, where he portrayed the character Tasuku Enishi, proving that his creative energy remains undiminished after decades in the spotlight.

Maro’s legacy is also carried forward by his two sons, who have both made significant marks in the entertainment industry. Tatsushi Ōmori has established himself as a film director, while Nao Ōmori is a well-known actor. Together, the family represents a multi-generational contribution to Japanese culture. Maro’s ability to bridge the gap between the radical, underground origins of butoh and the mainstream success of modern cinema highlights his unique position as a bridge between artistic worlds, ensuring that his impact on performance will be felt for years to come.
