Is a medium what an artwork is, or what it's made of?
In short: In art history, 'medium' is a linguistic chameleon. It can describe the category of a work—like painting or sculpture—or the physical substance used to create it, such as bronze or oil paint. Understanding this distinction is key to decoding how artists manipulate materials to convey meaning.
The term 'medium' carries two principal overlapping meanings in art history. First, it refers to a type of art form: painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking are all considered media. Second, it refers to the specific materials used to construct those works. For example, while 'sculpture' is a category of art, 'bronze' or 'marble' are the media from which a specific sculpture is made. This distinction becomes complex in modern art, where artists like Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp established that art can be composed of absolutely any material—ranging from found objects to bodily excretions.
Technically, the medium also describes the chemical composition of materials. In painting, for instance, 'medium' refers to the liquid binder in which pigments are suspended; the medium of oil paint is linseed oil. This physical makeup dictates the expressive capacity and final texture of a piece. For example, oil paint is favored for its slow drying time, which allows artists to blend colors seamlessly to model three-dimensional forms or apply translucent glazes that produce rich, glowing colors.
Modern practice has expanded these definitions further through 'mixed media' and 'new media.' Assemblage and installation are now considered new media because they are sufficiently distinct from traditional sculpture. Performance art takes this a step further by using the artist’s own body as the medium. Art historians examine if selected materials restrict creative choices, evoke distinct atmospheres, or guide viewer interpretation—for instance, by incorporating everyday items like bus tickets to heighten a work's relatability.
