How a small Ozark town became a global hub for American art and retail.
In short: Bentonville, Arkansas, has evolved from a quiet hunting ground and agricultural settlement into a bustling international business center. While best known as the birthplace of Walmart, the city has recently transformed into a premier destination for contemporary culture, anchored by world-class museums and a rapidly growing, diverse population.
Originally utilized as hunting grounds by the Osage Nation, the area was settled by European farmers around 1837. Named after Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton, the town square became the Benton County seat. Despite its rural origins, the city experienced significant upheaval, including the forced passage of thousands of Cherokee people during the Trail of Tears in 1838 and widespread destruction during the Civil War. By the early twentieth century, the region gained prominence as a national leader in apple production and later, poultry farming.
The city's modern trajectory was fundamentally altered in 1950 when Sam Walton purchased a variety store on the town square. This single location grew into Walmart, the world's largest retailer. The company's headquarters remained in Bentonville, largely due to Helen Walton's desire to raise their family there. This corporate presence attracted over 1,100 vendors to the region, creating a unique, transient demographic that blends Southern traditions with global business influences. Today, the city serves as a hub for international software and IT professionals, even fostering a local cricket league.
In the twenty-first century, Bentonville has pivoted toward tourism and the arts. The 2011 opening of the $450 million Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, founded by Alice Walton, cemented the city's status as a cultural destination. This institution is now part of a broader ecosystem that includes the 21C Museum Hotel, the contemporary art venue known as The Momentary, and the annual Bentonville Film Festival, which draws over 85,000 attendees. This shift has helped make Bentonville one of the fastest-growing cities in Arkansas.
