In short: Before she became the primary caregiver for Oscar-winner Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa was a classical pianist who performed with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra at age eleven. Her life moved from the concert hall to the world of high-stakes literary production and local entrepreneurship in New Mexico.

Born in Hawaii in 1959, Betsy Arakawa balanced a diverse career before her marriage in 1991. A classically trained musician, she performed Haydn's Keyboard Concerto No. 4 as a child. Her professional path was eclectic, ranging from serving as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Aztecs to working as a production assistant for the television game show Card Sharks. She eventually earned a master's degree in liberal arts from St. John's College in Santa Fe. She attended Kahala Elementary School and Punahou School during her youth. Her mother, a businesswoman, raised her as an only child. Between 1981 and 1983, Arakawa attended the University of Southern California to pursue communication and social sciences.

After marrying Gene Hackman, Arakawa transitioned into a vital role as a literary collaborator and business partner. She was instrumental in the publication of three historical novels, where she managed the grueling process of typing handwritten notes, editing, and mediating heated disagreements between co-authors. Beyond the page, she co-founded a home furnishings store called Pandora's and a local Asian restaurant, Jinja, where she personally helped develop the menu. The couple lived in a unique home in the Santa Fe mountains. They collaborated with architects to transform a 1950s block building into a residence. This house featured a studio for her grand pianos and his art.

In her final years, Arakawa served as Hackman's sole caregiver as he battled advanced Alzheimer's disease. She managed his diet, social life, and daily needs with extreme diligence. Tragically, she died in early 2025 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease transmitted from rodents. Because of his cognitive decline, investigators believe Hackman did not comprehend her death before he passed away from heart disease approximately one week later. Witnesses spotted her for the final time at a CVS Pharmacy on 11 February 2025. Her mother, Yoshie Feaster, requested that the media block images of the bodies. The investigation initially treated the deaths as suspicious.
