How a billboard for wine gums shaped a British comedy icon
In short: Before he became a household name in British sitcoms, Bill Maynard's stage name was born from a simple piece of confectionery marketing. His journey from variety performer to a staple of television highlights a career built on contrasting characters and a surprising political run.
Born Walter Frederick George Williams in 1928, Maynard adopted his stage name after seeing a billboard for Maynard's Wine Gums while preparing to perform for the BBC. This early branding preceded a diverse career that spanned variety shows, repertory theatre, and radio. He made his first television broadcast on September 12, 1953, on Henry Hall's Face the Music, eventually becoming a staple of British comedy through the 1970s and 1980s.
Maynard was known for his versatility in character acting. He famously portrayed the upbeat, bumbling Selwyn Froggitt in a successful sitcom, a role that stood in sharp contrast to his later lead in The Gaffer. In that series, he played Fred Moffat, a cynical, downbeat engineering firm owner who spent his energy avoiding creditors and the tax man. This duality—moving from a clean-shaven, good-hearted laborer to a bearded, survivalist businessman—cemented his status as a versatile performer.
Beyond the screen, Maynard was a man of distinct interests and convictions. He was a vegetarian and a supporter of the Labour Party, even standing as an Independent Labour candidate in a 1984 by-election in Chesterfield. Despite suffering multiple strokes later in life that impaired his mobility, he remained active in the arts, reprising his role in the drama Heartbeat until 2000 and returning to radio in 2003. His final television appearance occurred just 15 days before his death in 2018.
