Blue Man Group began by burning a Rambo doll in the street
Three friends in blue masks marched through Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1987, torching a Rambo doll and a chunk of the Berlin Wall. That street stunt grew into a mute, drum-pounding trio that played one off-Broadway theatre for over three decades and more than 17,000 shows.
Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton were close friends when they started staging what they called disturbances around downtown New York. MTV's Kurt Loder reported on their procession, and the attention led to club gigs and finally a full production at the Astor Place Theatre in 1991. The rules of the act never changed: the performers paint their skin blue, never speak on stage and always appear as a trio.
Keeping that going eight shows a week meant building a pipeline of Blue Men. The first understudy was trained in 1993, and a typical production now needs seven to nine full-timers chosen by audition. Recruits had to stand between five foot ten and six foot one, drum well and convey emotion without words, while learning six archetypes the company names as innocent, hero, scientist, shaman, group member and trickster. Andrea Johnson became the first woman in the role, performing from 1999 to 2001.
The shows play with science and technology, from plumbing and fractals to DNA and the internet, and with information overload, sometimes making the audience choose between three streams of text at once. A running joke is naive imitation: an earnest attempt to serve a guest an elegant dinner of Twinkies, or to stage a rock concert by following an instruction manual. Rooftop imagery nods to the idea of following your bliss, which the founders took from Joseph Campbell's PBS series with Bill Moyers.
Ownership shifted over time. Goldman sold his stake to a venture-capital firm in 2010, and in 2017 Wink and Stanton sold theirs to Cirque du Soleil, which filed for bankruptcy in Canada in June 2020. The Orlando run closed in 2021, citing the pandemic, and the Astor Place residency ended on February 2, 2025. By then the only American shows left were in Las Vegas and Orlando.
