In short: Born into aristocracy, Carmen Maura traded a life of privilege for the stage. From her early days as a cabaret performer to her legendary collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar, she has defined Spanish film for seven decades. Maura remains a singular force, holding more Goya Awards for Best Actress than anyone.

Born in Madrid in 1945, María del Carmen García Maura emerged from an aristocratic lineage that included the Count of Fuente Nueva de Arenzana and the artist Bartolomé Maura y Montaner. Despite this background, she pursued a path in the arts, studying philosophy and literature in Paris before beginning her professional career as a cabaret singer. Her transition to the screen began in 1970 with a role in The Man in Hiding, eventually leading to a prolific career that has spanned seven decades.

Maura is perhaps most famous for her creative partnership with director Pedro Almodóvar. She appeared in his debut feature in 1980 and starred in five more of his projects throughout the 1980s, including the acclaimed Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. While the two experienced a professional estrangement that lasted over a decade, they reunited in 2006 for the film Volver. The title, meaning return, served as a poignant nod to their reconciliation and their shared success, which included a collective Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Beyond her comedic and dramatic range, Maura is celebrated as a cultural icon, particularly for her portrayal of a transgender character in Almodóvar's Law of Desire. This role solidified her reputation as an artist unafraid to challenge social norms. Her career has been marked by significant personal and professional highs and lows, including a period of bankruptcy in 1995 following financial fraud. Yet, she has maintained a steady trajectory of excellence, working with international directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Carlos Saura, and receiving prestigious honors such as the Locarno Excellence Award and the French Order of Arts and Letters.
