In short: Originally pitched as a dark, standalone horror film, Clayface evolved into a pivotal entry in the DC Universe. Starring Tom Rhys Harries as the tragic actor Matt Hagen, the film explores the psychological collapse of a man whose desperate attempt to restore his disfigured face leaves him trapped in living clay.

The project originated from filmmaker Mike Flanagan, who long envisioned a horror-thriller centered on the DC Comics character Matt Hagen. Inspired by the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series episode Feat of Clay, Flanagan pitched the concept to DC Studios in March 2023. Although he was initially unable to direct due to scheduling conflicts with other projects like The Exorcist: Martyrs, his script—later refined by Hossein Amini—remained the foundation of the film. James Watkins was eventually hired to direct in February 2025, bringing a vision that DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran compared to the 1986 horror classic The Fly.

The film is set within the DC Universe's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, though it functions as a distinct, grounded story. It follows Hagen, a rising movie star who, after suffering brutal facial disfigurement, turns to a fringe scientist named Dr. Caitlin Corr—played by Naomi Ackie—for a cure. The resulting transformation into a clay-like entity is not merely physical; the narrative focuses on Hagen’s inability to recognize himself and his subsequent descent into madness. Unlike typical superhero fare, the film was produced on a stripped-down budget of approximately $40 million, emphasizing a gritty, non-campy tone.

Principal photography took place between August 31 and November 1, 2025, primarily in Liverpool, England, which doubled for Gotham City, and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Despite the physical demands of the role, lead actor Tom Rhys Harries performed his scenes while recovering from a torn ACL. The film, which features a supporting cast including Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 23, 2026. Strategically positioned as a Halloween event, the film aims to attract horror enthusiasts who might otherwise bypass traditional superhero cinema.
