How a shy teenager used magic to transform himself into a global entertainment icon
In short: David Copperfield began his career as a ventriloquist at age ten, seeking a way to overcome his shyness. He eventually evolved into one of the most successful illusionists in history, blending complex storytelling with spectacular, large-scale feats that captivated audiences across the globe for more than four decades.
Born David Seth Kotkin in 1956, the future illusionist grew up in Metuchen, New Jersey. By age 12, he had become the youngest person ever accepted into the Society of American Magicians. He initially performed under the name Davino, but later adopted the moniker David Copperfield. Interestingly, he admitted he never finished reading the Charles Dickens novel that inspired his stage name, finding the classic work too dark for his personal taste.
Copperfield’s rise was rapid. While still a teenager, he taught a magic course at New York University and soon left Fordham University to star in the Chicago-based musical The Magic Man. His transition to national fame occurred in the late 1970s, when he was hired to promote the ABC network season. This led to a long-running series of high-profile television specials on CBS, which showcased his increasingly ambitious illusions, such as walking through the Great Wall of China and seemingly vanishing the Statue of Liberty.
Beyond his television work, Copperfield maintained a long-running residency in Las Vegas and became a major collector of magic history, acquiring the John Mulholland Collection in 1991 to house in his private museum. He also supported Project Magic, a program using sleight-of-hand techniques as therapeutic tools. While his career has been marked by immense commercial success and numerous accolades, it has also been shadowed by allegations of misconduct, which his legal team has consistently denied.
