Francis Ford Coppola got his middle name from Henry Ford's hospital and radio show
Coppola was born at Henry Ford Hospital while his flautist father arranged music for a Ford-sponsored radio concert series, so his parents named him Ford. The boy who spent long stretches bedridden with polio, staging puppet plays, went on to make The Godfather and win the Palme d'Or twice.
He was born in Detroit on 7 April 1939. His father Carmine played flute with the Detroit Symphony and, two years later, joined Arturo Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra, moving the family to Woodside, Queens. His maternal grandfather, Francesco Pennino, was a popular composer from Naples. Polio kept young Francis in bed for long periods, and he filled them with homemade puppet theatre and 8 mm films cut together from home movies. Classmates called the mediocre but gadget-mad pupil Science, and by graduation he had passed through 23 schools.
A tuba scholarship got him into a military academy, but reading A Streetcar Named Desire at 15 turned him toward theatre. At Hofstra his father pushed engineering; Coppola instead ran the drama societies, merging them into a troupe that mounted a new show every week. Watching Eisenstein's October, with its bold editing, swung him from stage to screen. Among his classmates was James Caan, whom he later cast.
At UCLA film school he met Jim Morrison and scraped by on about $10 a week, taking odd jobs re-cutting low-budget pictures. Roger Corman hired him as an assistant in 1962, then let him use leftover money from an Irish shoot to make Dementia 13, written in a night and shot in nine days for $40,000. On that set he met Eleanor Neil, his future wife. His UCLA thesis, You're a Big Boy Now, earned a Warner Bros. release, and on Finian's Rainbow, with Fred Astaire, he met George Lucas.
Tired of studio control, he dreamed of a rebel studio and named it Zoetrope after a gift of zoetropes from a Danish filmmaker. The Godfather and its 1974 sequel both won Best Picture, the second bringing him Best Director, and The Conversation and Apocalypse Now each took the Palme d'Or. Later he turned to independent work, ending with Megalopolis in 2024, and makes wine in Napa. His sister Talia Shire and daughter Sofia also work in film.
