Gandalf is an immortal angelic spirit who chose the humble form of an old man.
In short: Far from being a mere wizard, Gandalf is a Maia—an immortal spirit from the realm of Valinor. Sent to Middle-earth to guide those opposing Sauron, he deliberately adopted the guise of a frail, staff-wielding elder to encourage humility and ensure his advice was received by the lords of the land.
Known as Olórin in his youth, Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar, a class of angelic beings serving the Creator. When the Valar decided to send the Istari—the order of Wizards—to Middle-earth to counter the rising threat of the Dark Lord Sauron, the Vala Manwë selected Olórin for the mission. Though he initially resisted, fearing he was too weak to face such an enemy, he was sent nonetheless. Upon his arrival in the Third Age, he was the last of the wizards to appear, appearing shorter and more aged than his peers, yet Círdan the Shipwright immediately recognized his greatness and gifted him Narya, the Ring of Fire.
Gandalf’s power was immense, yet he operated primarily through persuasion and guidance rather than brute force. He was forbidden from dominating others, a restriction Saruman increasingly ignored. His association with fire was both literal and metaphorical: he used it for fireworks to delight the hobbits of the Shire, but also as a weapon in dire need. His spirit, enhanced by his ring, was intended to kindle hope in those suffering from distress. Throughout his time in Middle-earth, he traveled tirelessly, often on foot, leaning on a staff, and gathering intelligence on Sauron’s resurgence.
His journey was marked by profound sacrifice. After leading the Fellowship of the Ring through the Mines of Moria, he fell into an abyss while battling a Balrog. He pursued the creature for days until they reached the peak of Zirakzigil, where he defeated it but died himself. He was subsequently sent back to Middle-earth to complete his task, returning as Gandalf the White. This transition represented a shift in status, as he became the head of the Order of Wizards. After the final defeat of Sauron and the crowning of Aragorn, he departed Middle-earth forever, sailing from the Grey Havens to the Undying Lands.
