In short: Known as La Lollo, Gina Lollobrigida was an international sex symbol of the 1950s and 60s. Yet, her life extended far beyond the Golden Age of Hollywood. From a furniture maker's daughter to a celebrated photojournalist and sculptor, she navigated fame, legal battles, and a profound commitment to humanitarian causes.

Born in Subiaco in 1927, Gina Lollobrigida initially pursued painting and sculpture before her modeling career under the name Diana Loris caught the attention of Italian directors. By the early 1950s, she had established herself as a leading European star, gaining international acclaim for her role in the French film Fanfan la Tulipe. Her English-language debut came in 1953 with John Huston’s Beat the Devil, though her career in American-produced films was complicated by a restrictive, long-term contract with Howard Hughes that limited her work in the United States for years.

Lollobrigida’s filmography includes iconic roles in Trapeze, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Solomon and Sheba. She was a versatile performer, even singing her own arias in the 1955 film Beautiful but Dangerous. Her work earned her numerous accolades, including multiple David di Donatello awards and a Golden Globe for her performance in the 1961 romantic comedy Come September. Despite her massive success, she remained grounded, later shifting her focus toward photojournalism—notably securing an exclusive interview with Fidel Castro—and executive roles in the cosmetics industry.

In her later years, Lollobrigida returned to her early artistic roots, working as a sculptor and supporting various Italian-American causes. Her philanthropy was significant; in 2013, she auctioned her jewelry collection, donating nearly US$5 million to fund stem-cell therapy research. When she passed away in Rome in 2023 at the age of 95, she was remembered not just as a screen legend, but as a woman who consistently reinvented herself, proving that her identity was never confined to the roles she played on camera.
