A power metal band where every member is a character
In short: Imagine a band where the music is only half the story. In Gloryhammer, every musician is a costumed character in a sprawling narrative. From medieval armor to cosmic battles, they blend high-concept fantasy with heavy metal, turning a concert into a live-action role-playing experience.
Founded by keyboardist Christopher Bowes, who also leads the band Alestorm, Gloryhammer is built on a foundation of narrative world-building. Unlike traditional bands where members are just musicians, each person in Gloryhammer represents a specific character within their story concept. This commitment to the bit extends to their live performances, where members appear in full armor and costumes to embody their roles.
The band's discography follows a cinematic progression. Their debut, Tales from the Kingdom of Fife, arrived in March 2013, followed by Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards in 2015. These albums helped them enter official charts in several countries and secure high-profile tours with established acts like Blind Guardian and HammerFall. By 2019, they released Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex, continuing their expansion into sci-fi and fantasy themes.
However, the band's journey has not been without controversy. In August 2021, the group faced a significant crisis when internal chat logs from 2017 were leaked, revealing misogynist and racist humor. While the band eventually admitted the remarks were real and issued an apology, they denied allegations of domestic violence involving member James Cartwright. This period of turmoil preceded a lineup change in December 2021, when Sozos Michael was introduced as the new lead singer, leading into their 2023 release, Return to the Kingdom of Fife.
