In short: Before Adrien Brody, one actress held the record for the longest Academy Award acceptance speech in history. Greer Garson, a pillar of Hollywood's Golden Age, spoke for five and a half minutes after winning Best Actress. Her career was defined by grace, resilience, and a series of historic nominations.

Born in 1904, Greer Garson rose from a modest background to become one of the most bankable stars at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. After a stage career in England, she signed with studio head Louis B. Mayer in 1937. Her film debut in 1939's Goodbye, Mr. Chips earned her immediate acclaim, setting the stage for a remarkable run of five consecutive Academy Award nominations between 1941 and 1945. This feat tied a record previously set by Bette Davis.

Garson’s most iconic role came in 1942 as the titular character in Mrs. Miniver, a film depicting a British family on the homefront during the Second World War. Her victory for this role was marked by an acceptance speech so lengthy that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences felt compelled to implement a formal time limit for future winners. She remained a top box-office draw throughout the 1940s, despite enduring significant physical challenges, including a serious back injury sustained on set in 1946 that required multiple surgeries.

Beyond her film work, Garson was a noted philanthropist who funded theaters at Southern Methodist University and the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. Her later years were marked by a transition to ranching in New Mexico with her third husband, E.E. Fogelson, and continued recognition, including being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993. She died in 1996 at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most decorated actresses of the studio era.
