How a German Expressionist Became a Titan of the American Broadway Stage
In short: Hanya Holm arrived in New York to export German avant-garde dance, but history had other plans. Forced to shed her European roots amidst rising anti-German sentiment, she reinvented herself as a foundational figure of American modern dance, eventually choreographing iconic Broadway hits while training a new generation of legendary performers.
Born in 1893 in Worms, Germany, Hanya Holm was deeply shaped by the Ausdruckstanz movement. After witnessing a performance by Mary Wigman in 1920, Holm joined her company and eventually became a co-director. In 1931, she traveled to New York at the invitation of impresario Sol Hurok to establish a branch of the Wigman School, tasked with faithfully implementing the Wigman philosophy of dance in the United States.
The geopolitical climate of the 1930s fundamentally altered her trajectory. As Nazi activities fueled anti-German sentiment, Holm felt compelled to distance herself from her native country and mentor. By 1936, she rebranded her studio as the Hanya Holm School of Dance and established her own company. This period marked her transition from a German emissary to a central pillar of American modern dance, eventually being recognized as one of the 'Big Four' founders alongside Martha Graham, Charles Weidman, and Doris Humphrey.
Holm’s pedagogical influence was perhaps her most enduring legacy, as she trained influential artists like Alwin Nikolais, Glen Tetley, and Valerie Bettis. Her choreography was equally groundbreaking; she achieved a historic milestone in 1948 when her Labanotation score for Kiss Me, Kate became the first choreography ever copyrighted in the United States. Beyond her concert work, she left an indelible mark on musical theater, choreographing classics such as My Fair Lady and Camelot, proving that her unique spatial technique could bridge the gap between avant-garde expression and the commercial stage.
