From the Kit Kat Club to the Wizard of Oz, Joel Grey defines versatility.
In short: Joel Grey is an American icon whose career spans over eight decades. Best known for his chilling, Academy Award-winning performance as the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret, Grey has navigated Broadway, film, and television with singular precision, while simultaneously building a respected body of work as a professional photographer.
Born Joel David Katz in 1932, Grey began his professional journey at age 10 in a children's theatre program. By 1952, he was already a featured performer at New York's Copacabana. Early in his career, he adopted the surname Grey to avoid the ethnic stigma attached to his birth name, eventually making his Broadway debut in the early 1950s. His breakthrough arrived in 1966 when he originated the role of the Emcee in the Broadway musical Cabaret, a performance that earned him a Tony Award and defined his public persona as a master of sinister, malevolent charisma.
Grey’s transition to the 1972 film version of Cabaret was not without friction. Director Bob Fosse initially wanted to recast the role, but the studio insisted on Grey. Despite the tension, the film became a massive success, leading to an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This win placed him in an elite group of only ten people who have secured both a Tony and an Oscar for the same role. His career continued to evolve through diverse portrayals, ranging from the Wizard of Oz in Wicked to the martial arts master Chiun in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.
Beyond the stage and screen, Grey has cultivated a serious practice as a photographer, publishing four books of his work between 2003 and 2013. His subjects range from the layered billboards of New York City to intimate images captured on his phone. In his later years, he has also turned to directing, notably helming a Yiddish-language production of Fiddler on the Roof that became a surprise Off-Broadway hit. In 2015, he publicly discussed his sexuality, and his 2016 memoir, Master of Ceremonies, chronicles his life, family, and the challenges he faced as a gay man in the entertainment industry.
Grey’s influence remains deeply embedded in the fabric of American theatre. He has been honored with numerous lifetime achievement awards, including the Oscar Hammerstein Award in 2016 and a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2023. His career serves as a testament to the endurance of an artist who has successfully reinvented himself across multiple mediums for over half a century.
