From enslaved ancestor to starship engineer, LeVar Burton has spent decades shaping American culture.
In short: LeVar Burton is a rare cultural constant, moving from the harrowing portrayal of Kunta Kinte in Roots to the gentle, inquisitive host of Reading Rainbow. His career spans decades of television history, bridging the gap between historical trauma and futuristic optimism while consistently advocating for the power of literacy and imagination.
Born in West Germany in 1957 to a U.S. Army photographer and an English teacher, Burton grew up in Sacramento, California. His mother instilled a deep reverence for reading, insisting that her children speak properly and engage with literature. This foundation led him to a Roman Catholic seminary at age 13, though he eventually abandoned his path toward the priesthood to pursue drama at the University of Southern California.
His breakout role arrived at age 19 in the 1977 miniseries Roots. Playing Kunta Kinte, a Malinke man captured and enslaved in the 18th century, Burton became the face of a national phenomenon. The series was groundbreaking for its unflinching depiction of the Middle Passage and its focus on the perspectives of Black characters. Burton’s performance earned him an Emmy nomination and established his reputation as a serious, impactful actor.
Burton later achieved a different kind of fame as the host of Reading Rainbow, which ran from 1983 to 2006. As the show’s genial face, he encouraged generations of children to read, famously ceding the spotlight to young reviewers. Simultaneously, he portrayed the blind engineer Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation, a character who used an assistive device to perceive infrared and ultraviolet light. These roles allowed him to embody both the historical struggles of the past and the hopeful, liberated possibilities of the future.
Beyond acting, Burton has remained a dedicated literacy advocate. In 2023, he received the National Humanities Medal for his contributions as a storyteller and educator. Whether through his podcast, LeVar Burton Reads, or his children’s books, he continues to leverage his platform to foster empathy and curiosity, viewing his life’s work as a purposeful effort to connect humanity across time and space.
