In short: From the lush jungles of Madagascar to the bright lights of a European circus, this DreamWorks franchise has grossed over $2.2 billion. But as the series' box office numbers climbed, so did the complexity of its production, leaving a fourth installment in a state of indefinite limbo.

The Madagascar franchise, launched by DreamWorks Animation in 2005, follows the journey of four anthropomorphic animals from the Central Park Zoo: Alex the lion, Marty the even, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo. Originally a tale about zoo creatures attempting to reach New York after a shipwreck, this became a huge commercial success, ranking behind only Kung Fu Panda and Shrek as DreamWorks' third most profitable series. Notable actors such as Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, and David Schwimmer provide voices for the cast. The series also includes a variety of spin-offs, such as the television series The Penguins of Madagascar.

The franchise is distinguished by rising critical acclaim, as every primary entry earns superior ratings compared to its predecessor. The first film grossed over $532 million, while the second, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008), saw an increase to over $603 million. The third installment, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012), became the highest-grossing entry in the series, earning over $746 million worldwide. With worldwide box office totals exceeding $2.2 billion, this series ranks as the ninth most successful animated franchise. This success places it as the third highest-grossing series for DreamWorks Animation, trailing only Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.

Despite this financial success, the franchise's future remains unconfirmed. While a fourth film was originally scheduled for release on May 18, 2018, it was removed from the schedule in January 2015 following a corporate restructuring at DreamWorks. Although directors and executives have expressed interest in continuing the story, the project has been stalled indefinitely. The studio's spin-offs, such as the Penguins of Madagascar, have also seen varied results, with the 2014 feature film underperforming at the box office and resulting in a $57.1 million write-down for the studio. The 2014 Penguins of Madagascar film cost $132 million to produce. While directors like Tom McGrath have suggested characters might reappear, the project's status remains uncertain.
