A kiss that predicted a new kind of Cold War
In short: In 2016, a mural in Lithuania captured a moment of geopolitical friction through a single, shocking image. By depicting two of the world's most powerful leaders in a fraternal embrace, artists created a piece of street art that functioned as both a satirical joke and a chilling political forecast.
The mural, titled 'Make Everything Great Again,' was unveiled in May 2016 on the wall of the Keulė Rūkė restaurant in Vilnius, Lithuania. Created by artists Dominykas Čečkauskas and Mindaugas Bonanu, the work depicted Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin sharing a fraternal kiss. The title was a deliberate play on Trump's 'Make America Great Again' campaign slogan, while the imagery drew from the historical 'socialist fraternal greeting'—specifically a 1979 photograph of Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker.
The artists intended the work as a commentary on the 'ego' of both leaders and the shifting dynamics of the modern Cold War. Čečkauskas noted that while the two men appeared to get along well, the mural served as a prediction: if the U.S. and Russia were to find common ground, it might happen in the Baltic states, whether through 'tongues or with tanks.' While some viewers interpreted the kiss as homoerotic, Bonanu clarified that the gesture was rooted in Soviet history rather than sexuality, aiming to highlight a lack of historical knowledge in the West.
The mural's life was marked by rapid controversy and physical alteration. In August 2016, it was defaced with white paint and later restored as an image of the two leaders shotgunning a joint. By 2019, the original mural was largely painted over with the message 'make empathy great again,' though a small version remains in the building's courtyard. Despite the local friction, the work gained global attention, with critics noting its ability to cut through superficial sensation to offer a deeper, more provocative political critique.
