How an Osage girl from Oklahoma became America’s first major prima ballerina
In short: Maria Tallchief rose from an Osage reservation to redefine American ballet. As the muse of choreographer George Balanchine, she brought unparalleled speed and grace to the stage, becoming the first Native American to hold the rank of prima ballerina and leaving an indelible mark on the history of dance.
Born Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief in 1925 on an Osage reservation in Fairfax, Oklahoma, Maria Tallchief was of Osage and Scotch-Irish descent. Her early training was unconventional; she began ballet at age three and was forced to dance en pointe at age five by an instructor she later described as wretched. Her path shifted in 1933 when her family moved to Los Angeles, where she began rigorous training under Ernest Belcher, eventually relearning the fundamentals of ballet while also studying tap and Spanish dance.
Tallchief joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1942, a company that became her professional home for five years. It was here that she began her transformative collaboration with George Balanchine, whom she married in 1946. Their partnership was pivotal for the development of American ballet. After a brief stint with the Paris Opéra Ballet, she joined the New York City Ballet (NYCB) in 1948. Over her 18-year tenure with the company, she served as the primary exponent of Balanchine’s choreography, creating iconic roles in works such as The Nutcracker, Firebird, and Swan Lake.
Beyond her technical prowess, Tallchief was a trailblazer who navigated the complexities of her identity and the demands of a high-pressure career. After retiring from the stage in 1965, she transitioned into a distinguished teaching career in Chicago, founding the Lyric Opera’s ballet school and directing the Chicago City Ballet. Her legacy was formally recognized in 1996 with a Kennedy Center Honor and induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2023, she was further honored when the U.S. Mint featured her on a quarter as part of the American Women Quarters collection.
