In short: Matthew Perry captured global hearts as the sarcastic Chandler Bing on Friends, yet his off-screen reality was defined by a lifelong struggle with addiction. While he achieved immense fame and fortune, his journey from a nationally ranked Canadian tennis player to a Hollywood icon was marked by profound personal challenges.

Born in Williamstown in 1969, Perry was raised in Ottawa by his mother, Suzanne Langford, who served as press secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Before acting, he was a top-tier junior tennis player. However, after moving to Los Angeles at age 15 to live with his father, actor John Bennett Perry, he realized the competitive landscape was far more intense, leading him to pivot toward the arts at the Buckley School.

Perry’s career began with minor television roles throughout the 1980s, including appearances on Growing Pains and his first starring role in the sitcom Second Chance. His breakthrough arrived in 1994 with Friends. As Chandler Bing, he became a cultural phenomenon, eventually commanding a salary of $1 million per episode alongside his castmates by the show's final seasons. Despite this professional peak, he faced recurring difficulties with substance abuse, including an opioid addiction that led to a two-week coma in 2018.

Following his time on Friends, Perry sought to expand his range in projects like The West Wing, which earned him two Emmy nominations, and the film The Whole Nine Yards. His later years were characterized by a mix of television projects, including Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and a revival of The Odd Couple. He passed away in October 2023 at age 54. Investigations revealed his death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine, leading to legal action against several individuals who facilitated his access to the drug.
