In short: Is our culture moving past the cynical irony of the postmodern era? Metamodernism suggests we are entering a phase of "ironic sincerity"—a world where we acknowledge the absurdity of existence but still choose to act with hope, empathy, and a sense of purpose. It is the art of building the boat while it sails.

Metamodernism is a cultural paradigm that emerged as a response to both modernism and postmodernism. While it accepts many postmodern critiques—such as highlighting gender inequality—it argues that postmodern deconstruction fails to provide actual resolutions. Instead, it proposes a synthesis of opposing logics: modern idealism and postmodern skepticism, or modern sincerity and postmodern irony. This is often described as a "pendulum" oscillation between two poles, rather than a final destination.

The term has a complex history, appearing as early as 1975 to describe American literature and later in 1999 regarding African-American art. However, it gained significant academic traction in 2010 through the work of Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker. They defined the metamodern sensibility as a "pragmatic idealism" or "informed naivety." This shift is seen as a reaction to global crises like climate change and the 2008 financial crisis, where the culture of relativism and pastiche is being replaced by a focus on affect, storytelling, and engagement.

In the arts, this manifests as a return to a Romantic sensibility. Artists like Olafur Eliasson and Ragnar Kjartansson are noted for "resignifying the commonplace with significance," seeking to perceive a lost future. Some theorists, like Alexandra Dumitrescu, view it as a continuum of interconnectedness—a "palace under continuous construction." More recently, scholars like Greg Dember argue that the core of this movement is a preoccupation with valuing "felt experience" to protect the individual subject from being lost in postmodern, post-structuralist frameworks.

The underlying logic is often described as "recursive reflection." Just as postmodernism reflected on and transcended modernism, metamodernism seeks to objectify and transcend postmodernism. It is a "meta" cultural logic that includes all prior cultural logics within its own complexity. It is not a closed philosophy but an open-source document for understanding our current political economy and artistic landscape.
