How Michelle Yeoh transformed from a ballet dancer into a global action icon
In short: Before she was an Academy Award-winning legend, Michelle Yeoh was a trained ballerina whose career path shifted after a spinal injury. From Hong Kong martial arts cinema to the heights of Hollywood, she defied stereotypes, performed her own stunts, and became the first Asian woman to win an Oscar for acting.
Born in Ipoh, Malaysia, in 1962, Yeoh’s early life was defined by dance. She began ballet at age four and later trained at The Hammond School in England. A spinal injury ultimately ended her dreams of professional dance, leading her to pivot toward choreography and acting. Her entry into film began in the 1980s, where she quickly distinguished herself in Hong Kong action cinema by performing her own stunts—a rarity that earned her comparisons to Jackie Chan.
Her transition to Hollywood was not without friction. After her role in the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, she famously took a two-year hiatus because the industry offered only stereotypical roles, often assuming she could not speak English. She persisted, eventually securing iconic roles in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and later, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her performance as Evelyn Quan Wang in the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once marked a historic milestone, making her the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Beyond the screen, Yeoh is a dedicated activist, serving as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme and a campaigner for global road safety. Her influence has been recognized globally, from the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024 to her appointment as an International Olympic Committee member in 2023. Whether through her work in film or her advocacy for environmental and social causes, Yeoh has consistently challenged the boundaries of her profession and the expectations placed upon her.
