One of the world's largest collections of modern art
In short: Housed within the iconic Centre Pompidou, the Musée National d'Art Moderne holds a staggering collection of over 100,000 works. From the birth of Fauvism in 1905 to the radical shifts of contemporary art, it serves as a massive repository of human creativity across nearly a century of modern history.
The museum's identity is rooted in its role as the national guardian of modern art in France. Its lineage dates back to 1818 with the Musée du Luxembourg, which was the first European museum dedicated to living artists. The current institution was officially decided in 1934 and opened in 1947. This transition allowed the collection to expand significantly under its first director, Jean Cassou, who leveraged personal relationships with masters like Picasso and Braque to secure essential works for the national collection.
The scale of the collection is immense, featuring works by 6,400 artists from 90 different countries. It spans a vast range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and even architecture and design. The collection is organized by era: the 5th floor focuses on modern art from 1905 to 1960, while the 4th floor showcases contemporary art from 1960 onwards. This structure allows visitors to trace the evolution of artistic movements like Cubism, Surrealism, and Pop Art within a single complex.
Beyond its size, the museum serves as a site of historical and ethical complexity. It has faced the challenges of restitution, acknowledging and returning works looted during the Nazi occupation of France. In 2011, the museum admitted to holding three paintings stolen during the occupation, and in 2021, it held a tribute to a persecuted art collector. This commitment to addressing the history of its acquisitions ensures the museum remains a relevant and responsible steward of global culture.
