How a Scottish rock band took their name from a line in a song
In short: Formed in 1968, the Scottish hard rock outfit Nazareth built an enduring international legacy that spanned over five decades. While they drew inspiration from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, their moniker was plucked directly from the opening line of a classic song by The Band.
Nazareth emerged in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland, rising from the remnants of a local group called the Shadettes. The founding lineup featured vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet. By 1970, the band relocated to London, and their 1975 album Hair of the Dog propelled them to global recognition. The title track, often misidentified as "Son of a Bitch" due to its hook, became a staple of rock radio, while their cover of "Love Hurts" achieved platinum status in the United States and topped charts in six different countries.
The band's trajectory was marked by constant evolution and resilience. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, their popularity shifted, finding a particularly loyal audience in Europe, especially Germany. Despite the departure of key members and the tragic loss of original drummer Darrell Sweet in 1999, the group continued to record and tour. The band's influence was acknowledged by peers like Guns N' Roses, whose guitarist Slash noted that Axl Rose was deeply inspired by McCafferty's vocal style, leading the band to cover "Hair of the Dog" on their 1993 release, The Spaghetti Incident?
Longevity has been a defining trait of Nazareth, with the band celebrating its fortieth anniversary in 2008 and continuing to release studio albums well into the 21st century. Following the retirement of Dan McCafferty in 2013 and his subsequent death in 2022, Pete Agnew remains the sole surviving original member. The band has navigated numerous personnel changes, including the arrival of vocalists like Carl Sentance in 2015 and Gianni Pontillo in 2026, ensuring that the Nazareth name persists long after its inception in the late 1960s.
